Spotlight: Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry

Published by ourmonmouth under Community, Spotlight

I met Isaiah Cooper Executive Director of The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry at a Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce event. What wonderful things this organization is doing for people in need, and truly are an oasis for many families. I hope you take the time to learn a bit more about KMFP and give them the support required to continue to do such important work in our community.

About KMFP:

The Keyport Ministerium Food Pantry (KMFP) is a 501(c)(3) non for profit organization and as such we do the best we can to assist those that come to us for assistance from all walks in life. We have been existence since 1983 and strictly staffed by volunteers.

In July 2008 we were awarded two (2) proclamations for 25 years of service to the surrounding communities. We were honored to have received these proclamations from The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Mayor and Council of the Boro of Keyport.

We are also honored this year to have been named, at an event held March 25, 2009, Non-Profit of the Year by the Northern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce to receive the Crystal Beacon Award.

Our organization has been visited by many individuals and organizations. We were honored to have had dignitaries such as Assemblyman Samuel Thompson, Monmouth County Freeholder Director Barbara McMorrow, Freeholder Amy Mallet and Keyport Mayor Bergen and Council Members visit our facility. They have been able to meet our volunteers and see our operation first-hand. We welcome everyone to visit our facility. To arrange a visit please contact Executive Director Isaiah Cooper during our hours of operation.

We consider ourselves a small organization but operating in a BIG way and always taking that “Extra Step” to assist those who are in need. We are fortunate and eternally grateful to have the support of so many, especially during these times. Our clientele consists of families, grandparents caring for their grandchildren, Single mothers/fathers, Veterans, Single adults, Senior Citizens and Disabled.

We have people walking through our doors now more than ever who in the past were able to maintain some level of moderate income to make ends meet and now have lost their jobs. They now have to choose between putting food on their table for their family, paying the rent, utilities and possibly health care. We have Seniors who come to us now because their only income is Social Security and with the price of food and other items can barely survive. We have clients who own their homes telling us that their house is up for foreclosure or for the clients that rent their utilities (gas, electric, water) are being shut down because they cannot afford to pay the bill. Many of these people come to us with tears in their eyes telling us they never thought they would have to resort in having to come to a pantry but have no one to turn to and are in desperate need of assistance. We try to comfort them and explain that we are here to help them the best way we can and they should not feel ashamed in having to ask for help.

Many pantries and other organizations have had to close their doors, reduce their hours of operation or reduce the frequency of visits of the clients they serve due to lack of amenities and as a result the number of families we serve have increased. We try our best to assist all that come to us and will continue to do so because we have the continued support of so many.

Invest In Your health….A Financial Commitment That Can Last A LIFETIME!

Guest Blogger
Invest In Your health….A Financial Commitment That Can Last A LIFETIME!

By Maryann Jacks, M.D. – President, People’s Healthcare, LLC

During these difficult financial times we find ourselves thinking more about our money….where it’s going, where its gone, and more importantly where to invest it in the future. Many have taken a hard hit during this past year, and aren’t sure about whose advice to trust or follow. People seem to invest more time thinking about finances, listening more closely to the evening news, reading and talking to one another about investments, in hopes of finding some good financial advice.

In reflecting upon this as a physician, I often wonder why we don’t look more closely at ourselves and our health as an excellent financial investment. After all, when we invest in our health we often get immediate returns on our investment in a variety of ways, and certainly make an investment in our future. If you listened to President Obama’s recent Address To Congress in February, you may have been shocked by one of the statistics reported when discussing the crushing cost of healthcare:

“This is a cost that now causes a bankruptcy in America every 30 seconds. By the end of the year it could cause 1.5 million Americans to lose their home”.

And in speaking about his recovery plan with the largest investment ever in preventive care, he stated:

“because that’s one of the best ways to keep our people healthy and our costs under control”.

The bottom line is that illness is extremely costly…very few of us can afford it! A study done a number of years ago showed that more than half of those declaring bankruptcy due to illness already had health insurance. The first day that an elderly patient is admitted to a hospital, Medicare has more than a $1,000.00 out of pocket deductible. If you look at the NJ Hospital Association’s website, you can view average hospital charges as well as the average number of days spent in the hospital for specific diseases in New Jersey. You’ll be astounded by the hospital charges for everyday illnesses. Data collected during the 2006 – 2007 year, showed that a kidney stone hospitalization had an average length of stay of about 1.5 days, with average charges of $15,000/person. An asthma visit had a length of stay of about 3 days, with charges of approximately $22,500/person. Pneumonia resulted in a stay of about 6 days, with charges of about $45,000/person, and a heart attack had a length of stay of about 5.5 days, with charges of $56,500/person. These medical problems are far from uncommon. This same site reported statewide hospital discharges for that year of 10,500 people with a diagnosis of kidney stones, over 16,000 people with asthma, more than 35,000 people with pneumonia, and over 56,000 with heart attacks. Is it there any question why illness bankrupts people? True, many of these costs are negotiated down and covered by insurance companies (that is if you don’t happen to be one of the more than 46 million Americans who are uninsured these days). But there’s still high costs in deductibles, physician follow-up visits, medications, and needed services once you’re discharged…not to speak of the lost time and wages from work. And just to add to the high costs, Medical News Today reported in 2004 a study done by Healthgrades (a healthcare quality company) that looked at 37 million patient records. They concluded that 195,000 people per year died due to potentially preventable in-hospital medical errors in each of the years 2000, 2001, and 2002. Have I convinced you yet that you really owe it to yourself both personally and financially to invest in your health?

It’s been said that 80% of the burden of illness in this country, and 90% of the healthcare costs are due to preventable illness. And yet, there are signs all around us that people are not “investing” in good health. . Findings from the 2007 National Immunization Survey reported in Family Practice News showed that only about 21% of children aged 6-23 months received complete influenza immunization. (This age group has one of the highest risks of being hospitalized when they contract the flu). According to American Medical News, research presented at the 74th annual International Scientific Assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians indicated that the number of smokers highly dependent on nicotine has reached a 15-year high (smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer in our country). Obesity has reached epidemic proportions – a major contributor to a number of illnesses including diabetes (a leading cause of blindness in our country). Just what are we doing to ourselves? And as if that’s not bad enough, with regard to our general healthcare during these difficult financial times “more people are delaying or not filling prescriptions, skipping medical tests, or putting off medical care in general because of health care costs” according to a November article in the American Medical News.

Understood, there are those who are suffering greatly during these difficult financial times and can barely put food on the table. As a country we need to do a better job at making healthcare accessible and affordable for all people. In an article entitled “Measuring The Health Of Nations: Updating An Earlier Analysis”, the United States placed last on a list of 19 other industrialized countries in terms of deaths that could have been prevented if people had access to timely and effective healthcare. Yes that’s right…LAST!

But I also think that if we’re honest with ourselves, many of us just don’t prioritize our own healthcare. As a society, I think we often find it difficult to invest in ourselves. Many of us passionately care for our families, only to go for years without seeing a doctor ourselves. We may go to the doctor only when we feel “we have to”. We find ourselves skimping on healthcare if it costs anything more than what insurance covers, and place our health on a low priority list particularly during difficult and stressful times…probably when we need to attend to it most. We save money for a rainy day or for what may lie ahead, but what we don’t often think about the devastating personal and financial costs of an illness…the kind we see everyday in healthcare.

I’ve spent pretty much my entire life in healthcare. To this day I sometimes struggle with trying to get my own family members to seek appropriate care. I started as a young hospital volunteer, worked my way through college as an EKG technician and lab technician, became a registered nurse, and later went on to become a physician. I’ve been privileged to care for many wonderful patients, and they have allowed me to see healthcare from many different perspectives. One consistent theme that has been echoed by so many patients that I’ve seen over the years is the importance of good health – unfortunately it’s all too often a realization that came too late for them. If they had it to do over, I know they would do things differently.

Interview : Director of Parks & Recreation for Howell Township

Published by ourmonmouth under Community, Interviews

As a Howell resident, mountain biker, aspiring triathlete, and most importantly daddy I can say I love our park system. We are really fortunate to have such great parks that support a lifestyle and makes our community special. I am so looking forward to the warmer days ahead.

Howard:
Thanks for offering your time to speak with me Davide. I was introduced to Davide though his township emails informing Howell residents about upcoming events. For the readers of my blog that may not know you would you mind sharing with us a little bit about yourself and your role as Director of Parks and Recreation?

Davide:
My name is Davide Fuoco and I am the Director of Parks & Recreation for Howell Township. My job responsibilities include: the oversight of the Department and staff; the organizing and implementing of several youth and adult programs as well as community events; to maintain the township’s existing parks and facilities while seek opportunities for future development; to preserve open space and natural resources; establish the Department’s operating budget; serve as the liaison to all sport organizations and much more!

I received my B.A. in Recreation Administration from Kean University in 2003. Currently, I am pursuing an M.P.A. in Public Administration at Kean University. I am married and reside in Brick, NJ. I am an active volunteer with Big Brother/Big Sisters of America. I enjoy spending quality time with my wife, family and friends. I also enjoy the outdoors, camping, working out, practicing mixed martial arts and traveling around the world.

Howard:
Davide BBBS is one of my favorite charities I have been working closely with them for the last several months and will be attending their Annual Gourmet Food & Wine Tasting tasting in May. Can you highlight some of the upcoming programs and where we can find out details about them?

Davide:
Some of our upcoming programs include our Summer Day Camp Program, our Teen Adventures and Teen Expedition program. Our next special event is “Howell Day at Blue Claws” which is going to be on Monday, June 15th. The game will take place at the Blue Claws stadium and will start at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are sold at the Recreation Building only at $10.00 for children and $15.00 for adults. Tickets include admission to the game, a baseball cap and a food voucher for adults. All children under the age of 12 eats for free.

For a list of our all our programs, residents are encouraged to visit the Howell Parks & Recreation Department website. Once at our home page, click on “Activities and Forms Page” to view all of our current and future programs and events.

Howard:
That is awesome. I got to tell you that I am constantly impressed with the BlueClaws as an organization. What a classy group who understand what good affordable family entertainment is. One thing that has been on my mind was the threat of park closure due to budgeting issues. Do you foresee any issues this year?

Davide:
I don’t foresee any park closures in the near future but I do foresee problems with the maintenance/upkeep of these parks due to budget issues and the township furloughs. However, it is my job to assure all Township parks are kept up to code and are safe to all who utilize these facilities. There has been a delay of the opening of Easy Street Dog Park due to the tough economic times. This project has been put on hold until further notice.

Howard:
Do you run any volunteer programs for community members that want to help out?

Davide:
We don’t have any specific programs. However, the Parks & Recreation Department conducts several community events throughout the year and volunteers are always welcome. If anyone is interested in volunteering their services, we ask that they complete a Volunteer Form and when called upon to donate their time. Please note, Clean Communities (contact Laurie Dunwoody at DPW for more info) and the PAL (contact Chris Hill at HPD) have several programs throughout the year that focus on projects, activities and events that benefit the Howell community.

Howard:
If you had to pick out one place in your park system as a crown jewel. What would it be?

Davide:
Currently, our crown jewel has to be our purple playground which is located at Deerwood Park. Anytime after 3:00 in the afternoon during the weekdays, all day on the weekends or anytime during the summer months the playground is overwhelmed with children and their parents. It’s a great facility and gets a great deal of use which is everything you want to see at a Township park. Adjacent to this playground is our refurbished skate park which also draws a great crowd.
One of our hidden secrets that not many people are aware of is our Regional Playground named Pride Park which is located on Seton Hall Drive. This too is a great playground. More crown jewels are to come like the refurbished Oak Glen Park Basketball courts which is to be completed by the end of May. In the near future we will opening up Bonim park which will be our new premiere facility that will consist of 8 soccer fields, 2 all purpose fields and 5 softball fields. In addition to, it will consist of several picnic and playground areas.

For a complete list of our parks and amenities with pictures of the site as well as an address, visit the Howell Township’s website and click on “Departments”, then follow to “Parks & Recreation” and lastly click on “Recreational Facilities & Parks.”

Howard:
Thank you for sharing that with us. You must get tremendous personal satisfaction from your job knowing what an impact these parks have on the community.

Davide:
My pleasure! It’s why I embarked on a career in Parks & Recreation. There are not many careers out there where you can make such an impact on so many people’s lives. I consider all Park & Recreation professionals unsung heroes which is why I take pride in being part of such a wonderful profession.

Howard:
Davide on behalf of all Howell residents I want to thank you for the tremendous job you do. You do a precious service for all of us. Thanks again for taking the time out of your schedule to talk with me. I really enjoyed it and am really looking forward to spending time outdoors. You can catch me (if you can) in Allaire on the mountain bike!

Davide:
Thanks Howard – enjoy this beautiful day and the weekend!
